Is there a difference between “Art” and “Design” or are they one and the same?
-I feel that “Art” and “Design” are two different things. While both artists and designers are both creating something-typically visual, they have different intentions.
If they’re not the same, what’s the difference?
-In my opinion, “Art” is a form of self expression, it has some type of message or meaning. There are so many different types of art. For example, a simple photograph, a painting, a musician, a dance, sculptures, and so many more. “Design” on the other hand does not have a message to think about, it is just a pleasant sight to see. For example, the design of a new kitchen, or backyard, the design of your new shoes, there is no alternate message to think on.
In your description of the difference, do you ever find yourself using terms such as “self-expression,” “function,” “monetary compensation,” “form,” “commission,” “meaning” or “aesthetics”?
-Yes, I actually used the terms “self-expression”, “form” and “meaning” in my responses.
If you use any of these terms when defining the difference, are any exclusive to either “Art” or “Design”?
-I would say I used the terms more towards my description of “Art” over “Design”.
If you wanted a nice picture to hang on a wall in your home, do you think you could produce it yourself after a sufficient amount of art education?
-I think “Art” is the type of thing where there is no right or wrong. Anyone can create art without an education. There are many pieces of artwork that may appear ugly or cheap to some, while it may be the complete opposite for others. This is because there is no right way to make art. I don’t think I would need a sufficient amount of art education in order to create a nice piece to hang on my wall at home. I would also agree however, with an art education I probably would learn the skills needed be able to do something better.
When you hire someone to do something for you that involves making aesthetic decisions, do you worry about getting your money’s worth?
-Yes, if I am going to hire someone to make an aesthetic decision for me, like design my home, then I definitely want them to make the right decisions. To feel like I got my money’s worth, I would want someone who understands what I like and incorporate new ideas as well. It would feel like a complete waste if I did not love what I paid for.
If you own an automobile, which is more important: how it looks or how it drives?
In my opinion, that is a tough question. I personally would love a car that looks nice, but if it doesn’t drive well or last long then it seems completely pointless. The point of having a car is that is actually drives to get you places, so in the end it is more important that is drives well.
Have you ever lived with an object you initially thought was ugly and then changed your mind about it after a period of time?
Yes, my first car.
What changed your mind?
-My first car was a very old Acura, and it was gold to make it worse. I hated it for weeks because I wanted something nicer. Overtime I learned to appreciate it, and love it because it didn’t really matter how it looked. I didn’t even think it was that ugly anymore after a few months. That car ended up saving my life when I totaled it. I loved that car, it was so good to me.
